The invention discloses a hydrogen storage tank with a nanoporous gas permeable layer. Gas storage tanks are provided. The tank includes a liner defining an interior compartment; a boss connected to the liner; an interlayer covering a portion of the boss and the liner, the sandwich being non-pyrolytic and comprising an interconnected network and diameter pores larger than the diameter of a hydrogen molecule and less than or equal to about 2 nm; and a shell comprising a carbon fiber reinforced composite material, the shell covering the sandwich except for the ends of the sandwich that are in contact with the protrusions, such that the ends of the sandwich define areas exposed to the external environment Sandwich ring. The storage tank is configured such that as the gas diffuses through the liner to the interlayer, the interlayer conducts the gas away from the exposed interlayer ring. A method of making the storage tank is also provided. |
