Compositions and methods for improving brain function or enhancing learning or memory are provided. The composition may comprise one or more agents that increase the efficacy of METTL3 ( N6 -adenosyl methyltransferase 70 kDa subunit) in at least one body site of the subject. The method can include administering to a subject a composition comprising one or more agents that increase the efficacy of METTL3 in at least one body site of the subject. Also provided are methods for assessing a subject's learning ability or memory ability. The method can include assessing the level of N6 -methyladenosine ( m6A )-related protein in at least one body part of the subject, and comparing the level of m6A or the m6A -related protein to a standard level.
