abstract | The present invention relates to methods and devices providing parameters indicating an increased probability of occurrence of postoperative delirium. According to the first invention aspect, there is provided the step of: detecting (401) at least one EEG signal at the head of the patient; determining (402) an intraoperative alpha peak frequency of the EEG signal, wherein the alpha peak frequency in the power spectrum of the EEG signal is the frequency of maximum power in the alpha band; checking (403) whether the measured intra-operative alpha peak frequency is significantly lower than a preset reference value of the alpha peak frequency; and for said situation providing (404) corresponding information as a parameter showing an increased probability of occurrence of postoperative delirium. In a second aspect of the invention, the power change in the alpha band is evaluated after administration of an anesthesia inducing drug. A third inventive aspect relates to the determination of the mean amplitude of the "direct" EEG signal and its curve at the onset of anesthesia-induced unconsciousness. |
