A system having an analyzer device in fluid communication with a bodily fluid sample, the system being formulated to chemically or electrochemically convert at least a portion of the ammonium ( NH4 + ) contained in the bodily fluid to ammonia ( NH3 ), and to convert the resulting ammonia ( NH3 ) is driven into the gas sensing chamber. An ammonia ( NH3 ) sensor located in the gas sensing chamber, coupled to the processor, is capable of determining the amount of ammonia ( NH3 ) in the gas sensing chamber relative to the total ammonia in the body fluid. |
