It has now been found that neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy can be effectively treated by administering to a subject in need of such treatment a composition comprising annexin a 1. Accordingly, the present invention relates to the treatment of neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy by administering a composition comprising annexin a1 to a preterm neonate.
