The present invention relates to the field of organic synthesis, and more particularly to the alpha alkylation of aldehydes with polycyclic olefins, followed by a ring opening step to provide compounds of formula (I): The compound is in the form of any one of its stereoisomers or a mixture thereof, wherein n represents 1 to 4, and R 2 to R 5 independently of each other represent a hydrogen atom or a C 1-6 straight-chain alkyl group or a C 3- 6 -branched alkyl; R 3 and R 4 or R 5 , or R 2 and R 3 taken together, form a saturated or unsaturated optionally substituted 5- or 6-membered carbocyclic ring. |
