Cartridge assembly with activated piercing member for an aerosol generating system |
abstract |
The present invention provides a cartridge assembly (10) for use in an aerosol generating system, the cartridge assembly comprising: a cartridge (12) including at least a first compartment (18) extending along a longitudinal axis, the the first compartment includes an aerosol-generating compound and is sealed at a first end by a first frangible barrier (22) extending in a respective plane transverse to the longitudinal axis; and configured to At least a first piercing member (38) that ruptures the first frangible barrier (22). The first piercing member (38) includes: a first piercing body (40) having a cross-sectional surface area of at least about 40% of the cross-sectional area of the at least one compartment (19); A channel (381, 382) extending through the first piercing body (40) parallel to the longitudinal axis of the barrel, the first channel (381, 382) having an inlet and an outlet. The first piercing member (38) is moveable along the longitudinal axis from a first position to a second position, wherein the first piercing body (38) when the first piercing member (38) is in the first position 40) retracted from the plane of the first frangible barrier (22); and wherein the first piercing body (40) passes through the first frangible when the first piercing member (38) is in said second position The plane of the barrier (22) extends into at least one compartment (18), and the at least one compartment (18) is in fluid communication with the inlet and outlet of the first channel (281, 382). At least one compartment (18) is sealed by a second frangible barrier (26) at an end opposite said first end, the cartridge assembly (10) further comprising a second frangible barrier (26) configured to rupture the second piercing member (44). |
