The present invention provides an efficient method for preparing chlorinated alkanes. The method includes contacting an olefin, a halogenated olefin, or a combination thereof, a halogenated methane containing at least one chlorine atom, at least one solid metal catalyst, and a ligand in a reactor to form a reaction mixture. The product mixture was free of phase transfer catalyst. After the product mixture is formed, the various fractions, distillate streams, and effluent streams are separated and/or treated with an aqueous alkaline material. The treatment removes at least a portion of the metals and maintains or increases the kinetics of the process by recovering the heavy ends, the treated product mixture, or a combination thereof. |
