The invention provides a method for improving contrast ratio when narrowing cell gap with high various characteristics as a liquid crystal display element. The invention provides a liquid crystal display element, which comprises a 1 st substrate provided with an electrode A, a 2 nd substrate arranged opposite to the 1 st substrate and provided with an electrode B, and a liquid crystal layer arranged between the 1 st substrate and the 2 nd substrate and oriented approximately vertically relative to the first substrate and the second substrate under the state of not applying voltage to the electrodes, wherein the electrode A is provided with a fishbone pattern with branch parts, the interval (S [ mu ] m) between adjacent branches in each branch in the fishbone pattern and the distance (d [ mu ] m) between the substrates of the 1 st substrate and the 2 nd substrate satisfy the relation of formula (1).
