Aqueous Polyurethane Microgel Dispersion |
abstract |
The present invention describes a method of forming a stable aqueous polyurethane microgel dispersion comprising the formation of a uniform flowable by blending a gel-forming polyol and an isocyanate for a time that is less than the gel time of the polyol and isocyanate a liquid mixture, preparing an oil phase containing the gel-forming polyol and isocyanate in approximately stoichiometric proportions; providing an aqueous phase containing a surfactant dispersed in water; combining the aqueous phase and the oil phase flowable liquid and subjecting the combined water and oil phases to high shear agitation to form an aqueous emulsion of micron-sized droplets of the oil-phase flowable mixture in water; and stirring the emulsion for a time sufficient to polymerize the micron-sized droplets, A stable aqueous suspension of solid polyurethane micron-sized gel particles is formed. The resulting aqueous suspension of solid polyurethane micron-sized gel particles is substantially free of isocyanate monomers and is a shelf-stable aqueous suspension of solid polyurethane micron-sized gel particles in water. Optionally, the benefit agent is introduced during or after the formation of the microgel dispersion. |
