abstract The present invention relates to a composition comprising bitumen; optionally a vegetable oil or a derivative thereof; and a lignin preparation, wherein the lignin preparation is characterized in that, relative to the weight of the lignin preparation, the lignin purity is 60-100wt. %; and the average molecular weight of lignin is 1000-5000 g/mol. The composition may be a bituminous binder composition or a bituminous composition. Accordingly, the present invention also relates to paving or roofing materials comprising the compositions of the present invention. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method of preparing an asphalt composition comprising mixing asphalt with filler material, adding a lignin preparation and a vegetable oil to the obtained mixture, preferably wherein the lignin preparation and the vegetable oil are added simultaneously.
