Manufacture of a two-piece elastic plunger |
abstract |
Provided herein is a technique for fabricating resilient container closures or plungers with embedded functional components to avoid thermal damage to the components. The technique includes molding a drug-contacting portion from a first material at a first temperature and for a first length of time that defines a first thermal exposure. After molding the drug contact portion, an auxiliary component is inserted into the drug contact portion, wherein the auxiliary component has an operating thermal budget that is less than the first thermal exposure. Next, the drug contacting portion and the auxiliary member are overmolded with a second material at a second temperature for a second length of time to form a non-drug contacting portion, and the non-drug contacting portion and the auxiliary member are overmolded The drug contacts are mechanically connected to form the elastic container closure and seal the auxiliary component inside the elastic container closure. The thermal exposure defined by the overmolding is less than the operating thermal budget of the auxiliary component. |
