The present invention provides a composition comprising at least one probiotic or enzyme selected from the group consisting of: (i) a probiotic or β-glucosidase having beta-glycosidase activity, (ii) a probiotic having esterase activity bacteria or esterase, (iii) a probiotic with both β-glucosidase activity and esterase activity or an enzyme with both β-glucosidase activity and esterase activity, (iv) a a probiotic and a second probiotic having esterase activity, (v) a probiotic and an esterase having beta-glucosidase activity, (vi) a beta-glycosidase and a probiotic having esterase activity, and (vii) Beta-glucosidases and esterases. The at least one probiotic can form one or more of oleuropein, olive acid, hydroxytyrosol acetate, or hydroxytyrosol from oleuropein. The composition may contain oleuropein. The composition may be used for the following: treating or preventing impaired mobility in middle-aged and elderly people; stimulating bone formation and/or inhibiting bone resorption; treating or preventing synovitis in individuals in need thereof or at risk of synovitis, or treating or preventing articular cartilage degeneration following synovitis in an individual suffering from or recovering from synovitis; or preventing or treating cartilage rupture. |
