abstract The present invention relates to a system for producing reactive oxidizing species, the system comprising a source of monovalent chlorine, a photocatalyst, a source of electromagnetic radiation and a fluid medium, wherein the source of monovalent chlorine is in the fluid medium under electromagnetic radiation contact with the photocatalyst. The present invention also relates to a method for forming an active oxidizing species, comprising: providing a source of monovalent chlorine, a photocatalyst, a source of electromagnetic radiation, and a fluid medium, and under electromagnetic radiation, in the fluid medium, the source of monovalent chlorine is allowed to contact with the photocatalyst.
