Improving Cancer Screening with Cell-Free Viral Nucleic Acids |
abstract |
Cell-free DNA molecules in mixtures of biological samples can be analyzed to detect viral DNA. Methylation of viral DNA molecules at one or more sites in the viral genome can be determined. The degree of methylation of a mixture can be measured in terms of one or more amounts of multiple cell-free DNA molecules that are methylated at a set of sites in a particular viral genome. The degree of methylation of a mixture can be determined in various ways, eg, in terms of the density of cell-free DNA molecules methylated at one site or across multiple sites or regions. The degree of methylation of the mixture can be compared to a reference degree of methylation, eg, as determined by at least two other groups of individuals. Cohorts can have different classes (including first conditions) associated with a particular viral genome. The first classification can be based on the comparison to determine whether the individual has the first condition. |
