abstract The flow battery according to the embodiment of the present invention includes a positive electrode 2 , negative electrodes 3 a and 3 b , a reaction chamber 10 , an electrolyte 5 , a manifold 20 , a plurality of first supply holes 13 a and 13 b , and a gas supply unit 11 . The reaction chamber 10 houses the positive electrode 2 and the negative electrodes 3a, 3b. The electrolytic solution 5 is accommodated in the reaction chamber 10, and is in contact with the positive electrode 2 and the negative electrodes 3a and 3b. The manifold 20 is arranged below the reaction chamber 10 . The plurality of first supply holes 13a, 13b connect the reaction chamber 10 with the manifold 20. The gas supply unit 11 supplies gas to the manifold 20 . When the manifold 20 is filled with the electrolyte 5, the positive electrode 2 and the negative electrodes 3a, 3b are not exposed to the electrolyte 5. When the manifold 20 is filled with gas, the reaction chamber 10 has a gas layer 7 that is not filled with the electrolyte 5.
