(1→3)-β-D-glucan as a measure of active mold |
abstract |
Electrokinetic devices and methods are described for collecting measurable reagents from dielectric fluid media. Electrokinetic flow can be induced by generating a plasma at a high voltage electrode and subsequently transporting charged particles with a voltage gradient. Actively growing molds release the carbohydrate cell wall component (1→3)-β-D-glucan into the air. The present invention recognizes that the airborne moiety is the moiety that affects the health of the respiratory system, and selectively examines free forms that are soluble in aqueous media. The sample to be analyzed is preferably collected by the electrokinetic propulsion method, but any air sampling method may be applied, such as filtration, impactor or impact. |
