titleOfInvention Dynamic charge compression ignition engine with multiple aftertreatment systems
abstract A method, apparatus, controller and algorithm for operating an internal combustion engine is described in which at least some ignition opportunities utilize Low Temperature Gasoline Combustion (LTGC). Other firing opportunities may be skipped or some other type of combustion, such as spark ignition, may be utilized. The nature of any particular firing opportunity is typically determined dynamically on a firing opportunity by firing opportunity basis during engine operation. Ignition with an LTGC produces little, if any, nitrogen oxides in the exhaust stream, and thus, in some implementations, an aftertreatment system may not be required to remove them from the exhaust stream.
