abstract An object of the present invention is to provide a positive electrode active material which has lithium transition metal composite oxide particles containing Ni and Al as a main component, has low charge transfer resistance, and can achieve high capacity of a battery. The positive electrode active material of the present invention is mainly composed of composite oxide particles containing Ni and Al. The composite oxide particles contain Al in an amount of 5 mol % or more with respect to the total molar amount of metal elements other than Li, and the Al concentration in the center portion of the particles is 3 mol % or more. Furthermore, on the surface of the composite oxide particle or its vicinity, there is an Al-rich region having an Al concentration that is 1.3 times or more the Al concentration in the center portion of the particle. In addition, the composite oxide particles contain sulfate ions in an amount of 0.04 mol% or more with respect to the total molar amount of the particles.
