titleOfInvention Method for reducing secondary propyl chloride alcohol in hydroxypropylated product
abstract The present invention provides a method for reducing the amount of secondary propylene chloride alcohol produced in a reaction to prepare hydroxypropylated/crosslinked starch, the method comprising removing residual propylene oxide from an alkaline slurry. The residual propylene oxide is removed by dewatering the alkaline slurry or by washing the starch in the slurry at a pH of about 10. The starch is then recovered from the second slurry in an acidic solution and may or may not be washed, depending on whether the slurry is prepared at a pH of about 10 to produce hydroxypropyl alcohol with less than 1 ppm of secondary propylene chloride alcohol Base/cross-linked starch.
