abstract |
The present invention relates to a method for preparing a coating composition with an open time additive, the method comprising the steps of: a) contacting an aqueous dispersion of alkali-swellable polymer particles with a rheology modifier and a binder to form a coating composition having a VOC of less than 50 g/L; and b) neutralizing the base swellable with a non-volatile base after or during contact with the rheology modifier and the binder particles to form swollen multi-stage polymer particles; wherein the alkali-swellable polymer particles comprise a shell having a T g of not higher than 25°C and an acid-functionalized core; and wherein the core-shell ratio is 1:3.2 to the range of 1:10. The composition obtained according to the method of the present invention can be used to increase the open time especially for low VOC coating applications. In another aspect, the present invention relates to the preparation of a coating composition having an open time additive comprising the steps of: a) contacting the open time additive with a rheology modifier and a binder to form a coating composition having an open time additive of less than 50 g/g L VOC coating composition, then b) neutralize the open time additive to form swollen multi-stage polymer particles, wherein the coating composition with the open time additive is different from the open time additive without the open time additive The coating composition exhibits a viscosity increase of less than 50% compared to that. |
