abstract The present invention relates to force-based corrosion detection of a vehicle steering rack. A method and system for estimating the degree of corrosion of a steering rack of a vehicle. The amount of torsional force applied to the steering rack is performed with respect to the displacement of the steering rack from the neutral position and the speed of movement of the vehicle, and is compared to the expected value corresponding to an uncorroded steering rack. The degree of difference between the measured and expected values can then be used to estimate the degree of corrosion of the steering rack.
