abstract A device according to an embodiment of the invention comprises a semiconductor device structure (10) comprising a light emitting region (14) interposed between an n-type semiconductor region (16) and a p-type semiconductor region (12). The surface of the p-type semiconductor region (12) perpendicular to the growth direction of the semiconductor device structure (10) includes a first part and a second part. The first part is less conductive than the second part. The device further comprises a p-contact (21) placed on the p-type semiconductor region (12) and an n-contact (26) placed on the n-type semiconductor region (16). The p-contact (21) includes a contact metal layer (20) and a blocking material layer (24). A layer (24) of blocking material is placed over the first portion, and no layer of blocking material (24) is placed over the second portion.
