The present invention relates to a high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) polypeptide, wherein in the HMGB1 polypeptide, a position corresponding to amino acid Y109, Y144, Y155 and/or Y162 of human HMGB1 has been placed at least one, preferably at least two, more preferably at least three, and most preferably all four of the tyrosine residues are replaced with independently selected from glutamic acid, glutamine, aspartic acid, asparagine, homoglutamine Amino acid residues of acid (2-aminoadipic acid) and homoglutamine (2,6-diamino-6-oxohexanoic acid).
