titleOfInvention Vascular occlusion diagnosis method, device and system
abstract The present invention relates to methods and systems for diagnosing vascular occlusions such as those that will occur in the form of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). More particularly, the present invention relates to software tools for use with sensor hardware to allow users to perform standardized and repeatable tests on patients to aid in the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis or related conditions. The present invention also relates to a device and method for performing the above-mentioned diagnosis. According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for diagnosing whether a blood vessel is occluded, comprising an interface for communicating with an imaging device, the imaging device comprising a transmitter and a receiver, and comprising a user interface and a processor The processor is programmed to perform the steps of: informing a user through the user interface of where to place the imaging device on the patient's body; instructing the imaging device to emit radiation from the probe; receiving reflected radiation from the imaging device; and fully automatically interpreting the reflection using the learned algorithm determine whether the imaging device is correctly positioned relative to the patient's blood vessels according to the reflected radiation; if the imaging device is not correctly positioned, notify the user to reposition the imaging device and repeat the above-mentioned instructing, receiving and determining steps until the imaging device is correct positioning; informing the user to apply pressure to the patient's blood vessel using the imaging device; instructing the imaging device to emit additional radiation; receiving additional reflected radiation from the imaging device; and determining whether the blood vessel is occluded based on at least the additional reflected radiation. The system can be arranged to work with any other real-time imaging device by retraining and/or relabeling new images. It also works with other non-real-time methods such as CT and MRI. For example, use a pressure cuff: scan uncompressed, scan compressed, assess the difference. The problem may be simpler and more expensive to set up, but the same pipeline arrangement will still work. Regarding CT and MRI scans, skilled medical professionals are still required to be present for the scans. The learned algorithm may include one or more elements of machine learning, and/or have been developed using machine learning.
