abstract Data to be sent over the channel from the transmitter to the receiver is encoded to obtain codewords. A codeword is defined by a plurality of variable nodes associated with a plurality of check nodes representing the bipartite graph of the code. Codewords are sent over the channel so that certain variable nodes are sent before other variable nodes. Certain variable nodes are associated with a subset of check nodes of the bipartite graph, and define sub-codewords known at the receiver. At the receiver, the sub-codeword is used to estimate the decodability of the transmitted codeword before all variable nodes of the codeword are received.
