abstract Disclosed herein is a radiation detector (100) comprising: a radiation absorbing layer (110) including electrodes; a voltage comparator (301) that compares the voltage of the electrodes with a first threshold (VI); a counter (320) ), which records the number of radiation photons absorbed by the radiation absorbing layer (110); a controller (310); and a voltmeter (306). The controller (310) is configured to start a time delay (TDI) from the moment the voltage comparator (301) determines that the absolute value of the voltage equals or exceeds the absolute value of the first threshold value (VI). The controller (310) is configured to cause the voltmeter (306) to measure voltage when the time delay (TDI) expires. The controller (310) is configured to determine the number of photons by dividing the voltage measured by the voltmeter (306) by the voltage induced by a single photon on the electrode. The controller (310) is configured to increment the number recorded by the counter (320) based on the number of photons.
