titleOfInvention | Polyimide oligomers and resin systems |
abstract | The present invention relates to polyimide oligomers and resin systems. The present invention provides a polyimide comprising a backbone having at least one nanoparticle component and made of an oligomer having end-capping groups, wherein the end-capping groups may be bifunctional or bifunctional and Monofunctional mixture. The end capping group may be a nadic or phenethynyl group. The backbone can be entirely inorganic or made of a mixture of inorganic and organic groups. The oligomers can be formed in situ using standard monomer reactant polymerization chemistry using solvents, or can be provided as preimidized compounds that can be solid or liquid. It is believed that the nanoparticle component of the polymer backbone provides superior thermo-oxidative stability compared to the unmodified organic backbone. It is also believed that the provision of bifunctional or mixed bifunctional and monofunctional end capping groups increases crosslinking, thereby providing improved strength and stiffness compared to fully monofunctional capped oligomers of polyimides. Nanoparticles are part of the backbone of the polymer, not just pendant groups. |
