abstract The present invention relates to metal-free antimicrobial and UV protection additives that can be used in construction or finishing materials such as plaster, mortar, primers, paints and other protective or decorative coatings to eliminate bacteria, fungi, algae and lichens growth and protects the material from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The additive comprises mixed organophilic layer illite-montmorillonite, chlorite, illite, carbonate, silica and hematite with the following component ratios (wt%): from 40% to 70% mixed Strataphilic illite-montmorillonite; from 5% to 10% chlorite; from 5% to 10% illite; from 0% to 20% carbonate; from 5% to 20% Silica; from 0% to 3% hematite. The mixed-layer illite-montmorillonite is organophilized with quaternary ammonium compounds used in amounts from 10% to 30% based on the desired weight of the mixed-layer organophilic illite-montmorillonite.
