abstract Disclosed herein are composite materials comprising population quenching (QQ) bacteria retained within a cross-linked polymeric matrix material, such as calcium alginate, for reducing and/or preventing membrane biofouling in wastewater treatment. The composite material may also include a biocompatible adsorbent material such as activated carbon and a surface coating of another polymeric material such as polysulfone. The composite materials disclosed herein may be particularly suitable for use in membrane bioreactors, particularly where the QQ mixed flora is suitable for aerobic membrane bioreactors, and others for anaerobic membrane bioreactors.
