abstract |
A method for producing glycolic acid or a derivative thereof, comprising: reacting formaldehyde with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a sulfur catalyst in a carbonylation reactor, the reactor being operated under suitable conditions to form glycolic acid; in the carbonylation reaction recovering a first product stream comprising glycolic acid, impurities and sulfur species in the vessel; passing the first product stream into an esterification reactor, where it undergoes an esterification reaction to form alkyl glycolate, and wherein the esterification reaction is Catalysis of sulfur species recovered in the first product stream; recovery of a second product stream comprising alkyl glycolate, sulfur species and impurities from the esterification reactor; separation of sulfur species from the second product stream and recycling it back to step ( a) carbonylation reactor to form a sulfur-lean second product stream; separating alkyl glycolate from the sulfur-lean second product stream in a rectification zone; and recovering alkyl glycolate and converting glycolate The alkyl ester is converted to glycolic acid. |
