abstract |
Methods of producing hydrogen are described. The method may include combining an aqueous base, formaldehyde, and a transition metal complex having a coordinate bond between the transition metal and the leaving group to form a homogeneous aqueous solution having a basic pH. The leaving group dissociates from the transition metal complex in response to light and/or the alkaline pH of the solution to generate hydrogen ( H2 ) and formate or salts thereof from formaldehyde present in a homogeneous aqueous solution. Subsequent hydrogenation of formate or salts thereof produces formaldehyde. |
