abstract |
The present invention relates to titanium dioxide particles and a method for producing the same. The present invention provides methods of making titanium dioxide particles with desired morphologies. The method includes providing a titanium dioxide sol and subsequently drying the sol to provide dried titanium dioxide particles. The method is characterized in that the morphology of the dried titanium dioxide particles is controlled by applying one or more of the following conditions: (a) the production of the titanium dioxide sol from a TiO2 -containing slurry obtained using a precipitation step in the sulfate process, wherein the precipitation is controlled the size of the micelles formed during the process; (b) making the titania sol from a TiO2 -containing slurry and controlling the pH of the slurry to affect the degree of flocculation of the titania sol; (c) making the titania from a TiO2 -containing slurry sol and adjust the isoelectric point of the titanium dioxide to affect the degree of flocculation of the titanium dioxide sol; (d) drying the titanium dioxide sol by applying heat and controlling the temperature employed during the drying step. |
