abstract | Articles made of porous material having a fibrillar microstructure of curved fibrils and a breakable coating such that the article can be altered by applying a force to the article in a direction substantially parallel to the direction in which the fibrils are oriented physical size. Applying tension to such an article in a direction substantially parallel to the orientation of the bent fibrils causes the breakable material to break and straighten the bent fibrils. Methods of making such articles are also described. The articles may include implantable articles such as vascular grafts and stent grafts; for example, the diameter or length of such devices may be forcibly increased in the event that forces rupture the coating. One such coated material is porous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene with a fluorinated ethylene propylene coating. |
