abstract A new class of diphenolic compounds derived from tyrosol or tyrosol analogs and hydroxybenzoic acid is disclosed, which can be used as monomers for the preparation of biocompatible polymers. Biocompatible polymers prepared from these monomeric diphenolic compounds are also disclosed, including novel biodegradable and/or bioresorbable polymers having the following formulae. These biocompatible polymers or polymer compositions with enhanced bioresorbability and processability are useful in a variety of medical applications, such as in medical devices and controlled release therapeutic compositions. The present invention also provides methods for preparing these monomeric diphenolic compounds and biocompatible polymers.
