abstract The invention provides a method for operating a piston internal combustion engine, comprising: -introducing air into a cylinder (3) of an engine (S1, IOS), -compressing air in a first compression stroke (CS1) of said cylinder (3), -providing fuel into said cylinder (3) in a first power stroke (PS1) after said first compression stroke (CS1) using a part of the oxygen in said compressed air as oxidant (S3, I1) for a first combustion, thereby producing oxygen-containing residuals, -compressing said residuals in a second compression stroke (CS2) after the first power stroke (PS1) (S5), and-using at least a part of the oxygen in said residuals as oxidant in a second power stroke (PS2) after said second compression stroke (CS2) for fuel into said cylinder (3) after said first combustion (S5, I2) to perform a second combustion, characterized in that the first compression stroke is repeated immediately after the second power stroke and air is introduced into the cylinder at the end of the second power stroke and/or at the beginning of the first compression stroke.
