An exhaust gas purifying catalyst comprising a catalyst layer containing palladium, rhodium and alumina, the alumina supporting an alkaline earth metal sulfate selected from barium sulfate and strontium sulfate, the catalyst layer being characterized in that on a virtual straight line passing through the catalyst layer in the thickness direction, characteristic X-ray intensities of the palladium, rhodium and alkaline earth metal are measured with an electron beam microanalyzer using each of 350 points at which the catalyst layer is equally divided in the thickness direction by 351 as a measurement point, and a correlation coefficient ρ is calculated from the characteristic X-ray intensities Pd,AE Is + 0.75- +1.00, rho Rh,AE Is 0.00 to + 0.25. |
