titleOfInvention Augmented reality display system with variable focus
abstract A near-eye optical display system useful for augmented reality applications and devices includes a diffractive waveguide with a Diffractive Optical Element (DOE) configured for input coupling, exit pupil expansion, and output coupling. An electrically modulated tunable Liquid Crystal (LC) lens is positioned between the diffraction grating and the user's eye. A polarization filter is located on the other side of the diffraction grating so that light from the real world enters the system in a particular polarization state (e.g., TM polarization). The tunable LC lens is configured to impose variable focusing on light having an opposite polarization state (e.g., TE polarization). The optical display system is arranged to be polarization sensitive such that the virtual image from the imager is outcoupled from the diffractive waveguide with TE polarization. Due to the sensitivity of the lens to TE polarization, the tunable LC lens can thus impose variable focus on the virtual image.
