abstract | A method for preparing 1,5-pentanediol from tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. The method includes dehydrating tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) to dihydropyran (DHP); dehydrating at least a portion of the DHP to 2-hydroxy-tetrahydropyran (2-HY-THP) in the absence of a homogeneous acid ); and hydrogenating at least a portion of 2-HY-THP to 1,5-pentanediol. The process can be carried out in the complete absence of noble metal catalysts. |
