abstract A secure microcontroller system is described according to various embodiments of the invention, the system including an integrated cache subsystem, a cryptographic engine, a buffer subsystem, and an external memory. The secure microcontroller contains a block encryption method to ensure that the contents of the communication between the integrated microcontroller and the external memory are protected and that the real-time performance of the system is preserved. In addition, the microcontroller system provides a user-configurable memory write strategy in which the memory write protocol may be selected to balance data consistency and system performance.
