abstract The present invention discloses a catheter having a catheter body and a distal tip segment with a needle positioned radially to extend out of the distal tip segment to penetrate and penetrate Layers of tissue that permeate blood vessels or tubular areas. The needle is supported in a retracted position within the distal tip segment on an elongate support member. For deployment, the needle is raised and a portion thereof is pushed into an opening through the distal tip segment by an actuator, which is longitudinally slidable on the elongated support member. The actuator has a tapered tip to aid in raising the needle over the actuator. In another embodiment, the needled inflatable balloon member is movable between a retracted position and a deployed position.
