abstract |
A method for treating water containing pollutants, comprising the steps of: (a) contacting the water to be treated with an inorganic oxide salt containing manganese or iron for a period of time effective to oxidize a portion of said pollutants; (b) contacting the water treated in the oxidation step (a) with at least one chlorinated agent for disinfection and in situ generating oxidation for the presence of the condensed water by reacting with the chemical compound produced in the pre-oxidation step (a) a coagulant for pollutants; (c) separating condensed pollutants from water; and (d) subjecting water to catalytic oxidation to oxidize residual oxidizable pollutants, the catalytic oxidation being catalyzed in part by manganese or iron species, depending on The residual selected oxidizing salt remaining in the aqueous solution after the oxidation step (a). Permanganate is a particularly advantageous inorganic oxidizing salt, and chlorine dioxide is a particularly preferred chlorine-containing disinfectant for use in step (b). An apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed. |
