titleOfInvention Expandable Sheath with Elastomeric Cross Section Section
abstract An expandable introducer sheath for passage of an implant delivery catheter, such as a catheter used to deliver a prosthetic heart valve. The expandable sheath balances the number, shape, and location of various rigid and elastic structures in the sheath to selectively program the expandability and buckling stiffness of the sheath. The expandable sheath can comprise, for example, an expandable tubular layer comprising alternating rigid and elastic wall portions of a single radial thickness. The combination of rigid and elastic wall sections allows for the torque and push strength of advancing the inflatable sheath, while accommodating temporary inflation. The expandable sheath can also be reinforced with a tubular braided fiber layer or scaffold structure for additional strength. Other embodiments include the selective use of slots or gaps at the distal end of the rigid wall portion to increase expansion and distribute strain.
