A permanent magnet may include a Fe16N2 phase in a strained state. In some embodiments, the strain may be maintained in the permanent magnet by a technique comprising etching a workpiece comprising Fe16N2-containing iron nitrides to introduce texture, straining the workpiece, and annealing the workpiece. In some embodiments, the strain can be maintained in the permanent magnet by a technique comprising: applying a layer of material to a workpiece comprising an iron-nitride containing Fe16N2 at a first temperature, and combining the layer of material with the iron-nitrogen-containing The iron-nitride-containing workpiece is brought to a second temperature, wherein the material has a different coefficient of thermal expansion than the iron-nitride-containing workpiece. Permanent magnets comprising Fe16N2 phases with maintained strain are also disclosed. |
