The present invention describes an apparatus for controlling the size of a filter passage opening of a ceramic filter element having pores flared in a trumpet shape, the apparatus comprising: a grinder having a grinding plate; and a filter holder for holding a ceramic filter element for controlled abrasion of the flared pores; wherein the filter holder comprises: a filter element holder for holding a filter element to be abraded such that a surface of the filter element is substantially in the same plane as a lower surface of the filter holder; an adjustable drive for controllably moving the surface of the filter element such that it remains substantially planar with or protrudes beyond a lower surface of a filter holder during abrading; and a tool for urging the filter holder toward the lapping plate. |
