titleOfInvention | Method for preparing monochloroacetic acid |
abstract | The present invention relates to a method of chlorinating acetic acid to form monochloroacetic acid, comprising the steps of: a. using acetic anhydride and/or acetyl chloride as a catalyst to react acetic acid with chlorine to form a liquid phase and a gas phase, the liquid phase comprising at least Monochloroacetic acid, acid chloride, acid anhydride and optionally unreacted acetic acid, and the gas phase contains HCl and acetic acid, acid chloride, acid anhydride and monochloroacetic acid, b. at a temperature of 120-180° C. and a pressure of 1-7 bar gaseous HCl strips the liquid phase, thereby forming a gaseous HCl stream comprising acetic acid, acid chlorides and optionally anhydrides, and monochloroacetic acid, and a liquid stream comprising monochloroacetic acid and dichloroacetic acid, c. The gaseous HCl stream of acid chlorides, anhydrides and optionally monochloroacetic acid is cooled to a temperature of 10‑60°C (preferably about 35°C), and d. the cooled gaseous HCl is fed to an absorber for absorption with acetic acid as absorbent Acetic acid, acid chloride, and optionally monochloroacetic acid and anhydride, thereby forming a stream comprising acetic acid and acid chloride. |
