Methods and systems for altering oral pH |
abstract |
Novel methods and systems for increasing the pH of a composition applied to the teeth and/or gums are disclosed. The composition is gellable under the influence of a pH change. The pH change is typically a pH increase in the case where the pH directly triggers gelation. The pH change is generally a pH decrease in the case of gelation induced by ions (e.g., calcium ions) released from the pH sensitive carrier. The device comprises a dispensing unit for the composition, the distal end of which is adapted to apply the substance to the teeth or gums. The device further comprises an electrode system comprising a first electrode and a second electrode, the first electrode being adapted to be held in contact with the aqueous liquid composition at a location at or near the tooth or gum and the second electrode being adapted to be held in contact with the aqueous liquid composition at a location remote from the tooth or gum, the electrode system being adapted to provide a potential difference of 1.5 to 10 volts between the electrodes. |
