titleOfInvention Systems and methods for forming and maintaining high performance FRCs
abstract The present invention provides systems and methods that facilitate the formation and maintenance of novel high performance field reversal configurations (FRCs). FTC systems for high performance FRC (HPF) include a central confinement vessel surrounded by two diametrically opposed opposing field theta pinch forming sections and two divertors beyond these forming sections to control neutral particle density and impurity contamination. A magnetic system includes a series of quasi-DC coils positioned axially along an FRC system component, a quasi-DC mirror coil between a confinement chamber and an adjacent forming section, and a mirror between the forming section and a divertor plug. The forming section includes a modular pulsed power forming system that allows the FRC to be formed in situ and then accelerated and ejected (=static formation) or simultaneously formed and accelerated (=dynamic formation). The FRC system also includes a neutral atom beam injector, a pellet injector, a getter system, an axial plasma gun, and a flux surface bias electrode.
