titleOfInvention | Early detection of lung cancer by DNA methylation phenotyping of saliva-derived cells |
abstract | In certain embodiments, the present application discloses methods for detecting lung cancer. The method includes characterizing cells extracted from human saliva, which is a valuable tissue substitute and a source of upper respiratory cells that become cancerous early in the development of lung cancer. The method includes staining the extracted cells with a fluorescent reporter gene that produces a specific pattern in the nuclei of the labeled cells, the pattern being observable by light microscopy. The pattern correlates with the type of epigenetic coding of DNA called DNA methylation, which changes in specific cells of the lung during cancer development compared to normal respiratory cells. |
