titleOfInvention Water Soluble Polycarbonates for Medical Applications
abstract Water-soluble biodegradable polymers are prepared by organic acid-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic carbonate monomers bearing active ester side chains. The initial polymer comprising active ester side chains is treated with an aminoalcohol which converts the active ester groups into N-substituted amide groups bearing mono-hydroxyalkyl and/or dihydroxyalkyl groups resulting in water soluble polymer. The water-soluble polymer is non-toxic and invisible in buffered serum solutions.
